Unit 6.2A Assignment On the class wiki site, post your favorite new Web 2.0 tool that has not been covered in detail in this class that you have discovered in this course or elsewhere. List the URL, what the tool is, and why you find it useful using the wiki template page. No duplication allowed-each page must be an original new tool. This can be done after reviewing the Unit 9 material, which covers more Web 2.0 resources. Student Name: Rachel Leach
Description of Site: Educreations is a website or app for teachers, students, and schools. The website allows teachers to record and share videos using whiteboard tools. There are multiple levels of plans for teachers or schools to purchase. In some levels teachers can make classes, import documents or pictures and export their videos. The free version, or “Basic”, still allows teachers to create videos but gives a limited amount of storage. The “Pro Classroom” version allows teachers to have 40 or more students assigned to the class, export their videos and gives more storage space, and costs $8.25 a month. The final version, “Pro School”, allows for 40 or more teachers to be assigned to the school, unlimited storage space, a teacher-student management tool, and costs $1495 a year.
The website also has an app for teachers or students to use. There are no ads that pop up for the teacher while he/she is recording and the students can easily find the videos teachers have posted. Educreations can be used in all grade levels but would work best for a school that is very technologically driven.
Educational Uses of Site Educreations is very useful for creating a video lesson using a white board simulation. It has effective visual features that allow teachers to upload pictures and manipulate/draw on them as they record. This would be a very helpful tool when working in a flipped classroom or when creating a video for a lesson with a substitute teacher. Teachers can also find other teacher’s videos for a reference or resource in the classroom. The videos are created by teachers and can be tailored to specific student’s needs or for whole class instruction. This allows the teacher to differentiate for enrichment and for support. It is able to be used across curriculum and grade levels, but also allows for interactive student lessons to be created. The white board tools correlate nicely with the SmartBoard and other interactive white boards. The app is a positive enforcement for students with i-phones or schools with i-pads.
Review of Site This is a very useful tool for teachers who are using mastery learning in their classrooms or schools. Teachers can create videos for the lessons and export them or create classrooms for students to watch the videos. Unfortunately for the teacher to use Educreations in the most effective manner the school will have to pay almost $1500 a year. When thinking about the amount of money for an entire school it is not a lot because each teacher will be able to have all his/her students in the class. I really like that there is also an app that goes along with the website. Many students use tablets or smartphones and this will easily allow them to watch videos not using a computer!
